The term "dark triad" refers to a frightening combination of evil personality qualities that certain people possess, however it sounds more like the title of a horror film or video game. We asked professionals to explain the dark triad in detail, including what it is, how to recognize a dark triad personality, and why someone who possesses these characteristics may be hazardous.
The Dark Triad: What Is It?
Two scholars first used the phrase "dark triad" in the Journal of Research on Personality in 2002. It depicts a concoction of three distinct yet connected negative personality traits. Most likely, you've heard of them:
Selfishness:
This is characterized as having a sense of entitlement and superiority, yet underneath the grandeur is usually a sense of inadequacy.
Maccabelian theory:
This entails having a pessimistic outlook on life, being extremely manipulative, and being prepared to deceive people in order to obtain what they desire.
Psychopathy:
Important characteristics include a lack of empathy, emotional indifference, impulsivity, and a propensity for large risks.
According to Paul Hokemeyer, PhD, a psychologist and the author of "Fragile Power: Why Having Everything Is Never Enough," "a person's disregard for others and an obsession with self are central to these types," he told Health. "They lack compassion, empathy, and a moral compass."
Individuals that possess the dark triangle features are more inclined to take advantage of others in order to advance in life and feel no guilt when they injure someone else. They have the ability to be hostile and dishonest.
How Frequently Do Dark Triad Personalities Occur?
"It's a bit hard to know exactly how many people fit this description since technically it isn't an official diagnosis in the DSM-5, our 'psychiatric bible,'" Health was informed by Thomas G. Plante, PhD, ABPP, adjunct clinical professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, and psychology professor at Santa Clara University. "The closest we have to this diagnosis is antisocial personality disorder [ASPD]."
Often referred to as sociopathy, ASPD is a recognized mental illness. Individuals with it consistently break the law and don't care about other people's sentiments. They exhibit a startling lack of empathy in addition to a great deal of animosity and anger, just as people with dark triad features.
"Sadly, [dark triad personalities] seem to be reasonably common given the available data," Plante stated, "and [they're] often reinforced in our culture, too."
What Are the Signs of Dark Triad Traits in Someone?
Because "they're charismatic and charming," people with a dark triad personality might be difficult to identify, according to Hokemeyer. "They're masters at flattery and making a person feel like they're special and fortunate to be in the presence of a person of elevated taste, intelligence, and compassion."
However, dark triad personalities are not able to maintain this belief indefinitely. "They eventually burn out relationships by exploiting the people with whom they become close," said Hokemeyer.
Dark triad qualities can be identified by these four behaviors.
An Incapacity To Maintain Prolonged Partnerships
Individuals with dark triangle tendencies might find it difficult to keep committed partnerships. This includes friends, relatives, and coworkers in addition to love relationships. "They have a string of unsuccessful relationships where they have 'cut off' significant people in their lives," Hokemeyer added.A Past of Being a "Victim" in Life and in Relationships
A Past of Being a "Victim" in Life and in Relationships
"People with a dark triad personality are masters in what's known as the narcissist cycle of abuse and gaslighting," Hokemeyer added. "When challenged, they quickly turn the tables to become the victim." A 2019 research that was published in Sage Journals states that acts of wrath or violence are frequently instigated when an individual with narcissistic personality disorder or narcissistic tendencies fears being abandoned or having their self-worth undermined.
Their Narratives' Inconsistencies
Although those who possess the dark triangle tendencies are experts at twisting the truth to suit their needs, throughout time, "they're unable to sustain their perfect veneer," according to Hokemeyer. The background information and purported facts about their life are contradictory and incoherent.
A Persistent Need to Be Satisfied
"Individuals with a dark triad personality always have to be fulfilled at the expense of everyone around them," said Hokemeyer. These individuals frequently express displeasure, feel like the victim, are never happy, and are always looking for fulfillment. "If you're left feeling depleted—emotionally, physically, or even financially—chances are you're being manipulated and used for their personal advantage," Hokemeyer said.
Can a Person With a Dark Triad Personality Be in a Relationship?
A connection with someone who exhibits a dark triad personality type is not advised by Hokemeyer. "It's dangerous to be in any kind of relationship, be it a friendship, an intimate affair, or a business association, with someone with a dark triad personality profile," Hokemeyer said. "These individuals are hardwired to exploit and will proceed to do so, regardless of how much you want them to change."
While it is possible for persons with dark triad personality characteristics to change, Hokemeyer pointed out that the chances of such happening are "minuscule." "A dark triad's personality features are firmly established in their minds and very resistant to any kind of pressure that would cause them to shift. The best course of action is to get away from them as soon as possible.
Seek assistance from a therapist or counselor if you're in a circumstance where you're unsure if the person has a dark triad personality or if you are unable to leave.
